The kind of stuff that you can buy at wally world in the automobile section... Can it be used on our outboards, following the directions on the can?

I'm planning on fogging the carbs and cylinders but thought about cleaning the carbs first, possibly without removing them...

Do you really want the dirt ect... falling from one carb onto the next carb?

Why not just take them off clean them up inside and out at the same time?

TMD

Yes, wallyworld carb cleaner is okay...as long as you use it a bench cleaner, ie.the carb is apart on the workbench for a good cleaning/soaking. Its NOT okay to spray into the carbs while the engine is running. Best to buy some seafoam and at least run some seafoam laced gas through the engine/motor before you winterize it. Or you could do the entire decarb process if you want.

Is there a sea foam spray? For the carbs as they are still on the engine? Or is the gas mix the only type?

Hi KClost,
Spraying something in the carb while it's on the motor does nothing for the carb and could damage the motor. All you'll end up with is a clean carb throat and body - while the stuff that can actually gum up the motor is INSIDE the carb. As was said previsouly, the ONLY way to properly clean a carb is to diassemble it and clean it. Don't look for the easy way out or you may regret it later...
- Scott

Spraying Deep Creep in your carbs and using Seafoam in the gas WILL clean out the insides of the carbs somewhat. Maybe not as good as taking them apart and cleaning them but it will work.

Re: Carb cleaner spray....?

Well I went to the marine dealer last night and they had a few cleaners that I might try. They are supposed to be sprayed into the carbs while the engine is at normal operating temp and running... Let it set for about 15 minutes and then run the engine at almost full throttle for at least 5 minutes to flush the carbs.

I might try it before fogging anything.

BTW, the motor is running fine, but I thought I would just try to do a little cleaning before winterizing it... I'm not real comfortable taking the carbs apart especially if they are working fine...

Klost, The instructions you post is generally used for decarbing procedures. SeaFoam does a great job on that. Do a searcha and you will find a lot of different methods. A can of Seafoam, 4 oz TCW3 and 1/2 to 3/4 gal gas in a small can run through the fuel lines does a better job than a spray and also decards. Check you plugs aftwards for fouling.

Re: Carb cleaner spray....?

Just a general comment to second what some have said above. Spraying anything in the carb throat is only going to clean the carb throat, which seldom if ever has any effect on the operation of the carb/engine. When was the last time you saw a dirty occluded carb throat? I am not talking about decarbing here. Think about it, when an engine is sucking it is drawing fuel out of the bowl, through the float valve, through the main jet and/or through the idle orifices, which finally enters the carb throat where it mixes with air. How do you think anything you spray in the throat is gonna travel upstream against the fuel flow to clean out the idle orifices, main jet, float valve, or bowl?

I am not convinced, though I will keep an open mind, that anything put in the gas itself at a concentration that won't cause any harm can remove any significant deposits either. I will concede that they may help prevent them from forming.

Do a search, there have been many discussions on this subject, just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Carb cleaner spray....?

I disagree with many that everything has to be pulled apart piece by piece.I have 2 chain saws,2 grass trimmers,2 garden tillers,2 lawn mowers,3 outboards(2 2 stroke,1 4 stroke)some of which didn't run at all or were hard to start and I used Seafoam in all of them and every one of them run fine now.I'm not trying to sell anything, just telling about results. There may be other products as good.My .o2cents.

Re: Carb cleaner spray....?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts,,,

Here is what I think.... I believe there at least is an advantage to using both the gas additives and the carb throat cleaners, but how much do you gain from them is obviously up for debate...

IF,IF,IF, You were getting ready to winterize your boat, using fuel stabilizer, fogging oil, the whole shabang,,,,,, Is there an advantage to using a decarb spray first, the type that you spray in a running engine like they instruct on the can... Or is it better to eliminate that whole process?
