I have about had it i have a 1998 115 cross flow that is missing/coughing i found it to be the top carb by sticking my fingers in the throat of the carb when i do this the motor runs like a top but as soon as i take my fingers out it is right back to coughing and sneezing i took top carb off took it apart and soaked it in acetone for a few hours then blasted all holes with air compressor carb looks clean the only thing i have not messed with is the two freeze plugs i am not sure how or if i need to remove them! put carb back together and put back on motor fired it up and same thing as before coughs and sneezes but if i stick my fingers in it is fine (WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON)???????

Re: carb cleaning (HELP)

you still have are not getting enough fuel at low speed, sticking your fingers in you cut off air supply, which enrichens the fuel level in the mixture. low speed jets not throughly cleaned. you obviously did not remove the jets and clean them. these are basic directions. more for a 2 cylinder motor, but the same idea. did you use a rebuild kit. if not, do so.

you can see diagrams here:

Re: carb cleaning (HELP)

OK was able to find a read able diagram #13's are high speed #3"s look like intermediate, #7 looks like low speed. if you remove the jets then blow carb cleaner thru the opening, so it drips out the inlets to the throat, that should surfice. rather than removing the plugs. when you have the jets out. take a couple of strands of copper wire, like out of an extention cord, and clean the orifices, this helps get any stuck on stuff off. hope this helps. these newer and larger motors are getting more complicated.

Re: carb cleaning (HELP)

took the carb apart and its clean as a whistle i can hold it up to the light and see through ALL orifices but just for the heck of it i ran wire through them all and a quick shot of carb cleaner. Could my problem be elswhere? like the fuel pump or does this strictly sound like the carb? the motor does nothing when i pump the fuel ball only smooths out with my finger in the throat of the top carb.

"the motor does nothing when i pump the fuel ball only smooths out with my finger in the throat of the top carb." don't understand. sould be nothing in the carb throat, until, you start turning the motor over. if you are getting fuel, in the throat, just by pumping the bulb. you float needle is not closing all the way.

Re: carb cleaning (HELP)

i may have stated that wrong when i pump the fuel ball it does nothing the motor still misses. The motor only runs smooth and stops missing with my two fingers in the top carbs throat. So i am asking if this means the prolem lies strickly with the carb or could there be something else i need to be looking for? The only thing i have NOT done with the carb is remove the core plugs but carbcleaner coam out the two tine holes behind the butterfly so i dont think there is a proble behind the core plugs!

Re: carb cleaning (HELP)

put the carb back together put it on the motor fired right up still coughs so i switched tanks from 25 to 1 mix to 50 to 1 mix no change! played with the timer base adjustment with motor running seemed to help when advanced cut back on coughing alot but dint stop all together. But when i give it gas or rev it up the motor bogs down and dies. starts right up it seems the higher the motor idles the less it coughs but when you give it gas it bogs and dies when you idle the motor down it coughs alot but revs up nice! HELP

Re: carb cleaning (HELP)

this is really bothering me so i am looking through other threads for ideas so i went out a started my motor at idle it coughs i push in the ket to prime it and it stalls! I restart it with about 1/4 throttle around 2000-2500 rpms it coughs and wants to stall but if i push in the key and prime it the motor stops coughing and revs up.Any ideas?
