Preparing to clean/ re-gasket my 3 WMV 18 carbs. I've cleaned many cycle/ car carbs, but for some reason feel a little more tentative with the outboard. I've read all the carb threads, but still have a few questions in my mind.

First: The Idle air jet, backdraft air jet and main jet. I assume you would remove them during cleaning? or not? I dont believe there is any type of oring....perhaps they are sealed in?....Service manual is silent on the issue.

Second: Idle misture screw. Now this guy I know I have to take out to clean well. I'm planning to turn in to seat measure turns, BUT, have to admit, I have reservations about having to tweek 6 separate mixture screws after the rebuild. If I get the screws back "very close" to where they were, should be in the ballpark, eh? Anyone recommend going back to manufacturer setting (1 1/4 turns)?

One last thing: Planning to replace inlet needle/seats(at float). But other than those, gaskets, float check and a good cleaning, I cant see anything else necessary unless it is obvious when I open it up. Any other suggestions?

Re: Carb Cleaning - Jet question 2000 Merc 200 HP V6 (carb)

I have a 200h.p with WMV 5 carbs...easy to do..you can take out the air and backdraft and there are no orings. I had to go smaller(richer) to prevent a lean sneeze when I put on new reeds...Easy to setup up...I also richened up the idle mixture sku's to 1 1/2 turns again to prevent lean sneeze and breaking reeds...These carbs are a piece of cake to do and I do them every couple of years given the great gas we now have...you must run a water filter or risk losing your motor. Every boat I have(9) has a racor on it....Retard the full timing 2 degrees from factory spec's and never worry about melting down a motor unless you use old gas or poor quality gas...I went up one size on the main jets just to have it running a little rich...Keep in mind that the cylinders won't all have the same jetting so if you change anything you need to know this... You have to have a manual that tells you what cylinder uses what backdraft jet, air jet and main jet...Lastly, not sure about your motor but my motor the each carb feeds two cyliders so in essence you have a 3 carb 2 barrell setup..The left venturi feeds the right cylinder. This comes into play when you read the manual on what jetting goes to what cylinder. I drew myself the carbs and then labled it what jets go where so I would know when putting it together. You can order all of these jets from your Merc dealer... I will stop here and hope this helps...
