this may be a dumb question but I had better ask it before it is too late. I could not fiqure out what to do winterize my carb so I ran it for a good while with Stabiful in it hoping that would prevent gum-up. I have no idea what fogging is? Can someone explain please. Thanks Guys

Use a foging or anti sling oil and with the engine at fast idle slowly pour the oil down the carb. till you get good exhaust smoke, when choke the engine out. (don't forget when your done to turn off the key and drain the engine.--bob

Re: Carb ? Fogging?

Thanks bob, I had one other issue as well. When I winterized used that stupid kit that I was very uncomfortable using because it just didnt seem to be right. So after 3 galls antifreeze I pulled the exhaust plugs the power steering cooling hose and drained that and the right side block plug(nothing came out when I did that one. The problem is I cant the left side block plug out because it is stripped. How big of an issue is this?

Many times on fresh water cooled engines, dirt, rust, sand, etc. can build up in the block and around the drain hole. Use a piece of wire and make sure it's clean.
As far as the other side goes, it could be a big problem if antifreeze didn't get to the block because the thermostat closed. It's a real problem with fresh water cooled boats, because the stat won't stay open long enough when not under a load to get such a small amout of antifreeze circulated evenly through the entire engine.

Re: Carb ? Fogging?

ok Don, I will go to town and see if I can it out. It kind of hard to get to because it is at a weird angle. I feel kinda of dumb because those are the only two plugs that did not come in my plug kit when I rebuilt it and now I am going to pay for it trying to get it out. If I had to would I be better off knocking one of the brass freeze plugs out?

the freeze plugs are high and wouldnt get all the water out. the block plugs are easy to come by and should be readily available at your local dealer.

Re: Carb ? Fogging?

I tried that winterizing kit the first year and did not like it since like Don says you don't really know if the stat is open, if if not the AF will go thru the exhaust but not into the block, so most people who use it drain a sample from each block drain to see if it does not freeze. To me if you are going to do that, you might as well just drain everything so you know for sure. My shop advised backfilling with no tox AF to reduce corrosion so that's what I do. I took the big 5 gallon container for the winterizing kit and turned it into a flush system for my trailer brakes!!!
About the drain plugs, I have never heard of them stripping, maybe you can spray em with PB blaster and let it sit, then go at it with the visegrips. Get new ones firs since they are brass (Soft)

they do get a little stuck at times and incorrect tools will round the heads making them even more difficult to remove. start with vice-grips if your brass drains are rounded.

Those drain plugs are usually made out of brass .. so even if you have to completely booger one up to get it out you shouldn't hurt the threads in the block and new plugs are cheap and easy to come by.
