Carb. Gaskets

Doing a carb cleaning this weekend. The carb gasket kit I thought I'd ordered from local dealer turned out to be what is probably best called a fuel pump re-build kit - has the diaphragms and gaskets for the fuel pump, but nothing else. This is my first time doing this so I hadn't noticed this right off the bat, until I went to actually re-assemble the carb this weekend.

Anyway, there are three gaskets on the carb that were not supplied: one for the bowl, one for the fuel filter attachment point, and one for between the carb. and the engine

The gaskets needed to be replaced but the dealer wasn't open (probably would have had to special order them anyway). So I went to autoparts store and bought a variety pack of gasket material. The cork material is the same material and thickness as two of the gaskets. There were two sheets of material that both looked similar in texture and thickness to the carb/engine gasket - one was labeled "high temp" so I used that.

So my questions are: Assuming that I cut these gaskets accurately enough (which I think I did - it wasn't that tough to do), is there any reason to think they will be inferior to OEM gaskets?

Second, from reading in this forum, I understand no sealer is to be used for carb. gaskets (The old ones had no apparent sealer on them).

Third, is the carb-engine interface considered "high temperature". I think that material is most similar to the gasket I removed (in color, stiffness and thickness), but the other "low temp" material was also fairly similar.

Thanks. I'm going to fire up the engine tonight after work and will report on results, or come asking for more help!

Re: Carb. Gaskets

Sounds like you've done a good job there.

Answers...

1. No. If cut accurately the gaskets will do the same job.
2. Correct, no sealer.
3. No. In this case that area should remain quite cool. The incoming fuel acts like a very effective 'evaporative cooler'.

Chris..............

Re: Carb. Gaskets

Thanks for the feedback. Got the thing assembled and fired up last night, so looking good so far.
