Carb help needed on 1971 6 HP

I recently inherited a 1971 6 HP, I took it home and hooked it to a gas can and it cranked on the first pull. However, the plastic housing that the filter screen is located in had a crack in it and it was leaking gas. I ordered a new one and a new screen and installed them. While the motor was sitting up waiting for the new parts to come in the float apparently stuck as gas would squirt out of the carb while I was squeezing the bulb. My neighbor took it home and took the carb off and cleaned. Now it will not start. The carb is getting gas because we took the drain plug out of the carb and gas ran out of it. It will start if you spray gas in the carb but it only runs until it burns the gas that I squirted in the carb (about 5 seconds). The motor had been sitting up for about 10 years but like I mentioned before it started on the first pull when I first got it home. Any ideas because me and my neighbor are about to go crazy. Nothing was replaced in the carb because he said it all looked fine once he got it cleaned up. He did say that the little gasket that goes on the idle adjustment was rotted and fell out but no gas is leaking out around the idle adjustment. How many turns out does the idle adjustment need? Any thoughts on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check for spark that will jump a gap of 1/4 " or more.

Spark seems good. As mentioned above was running good until the float stuck and my neighbor cleaned the carb. Now will only run when you squirt starting fluid into the carb. Starts right up with the starting fluid and runs for about 5 seconds.

Maybe some of the old gasket or something else got into the carbs idle circuits unseen.
Id pull it off and check all the passages a clear with soft copper wire and aerosol carb cleaner

PS dont use starting fluid, it has no oil in it and you will be then running the engine with no oil. Mix some two stroke mix into a spray bottle and use that.
Id dump some into the cylinders and turn the flywheel over before you do anything else as it will be dry at present

does it still have the old cork float? if so, it probably isnt floating anymore. is the boss gasket intact, uncompressed and in place? was the hs circuit cleaned out properly. obviously the ls circuit wasnt cleaned as you didnt add any parts. i would highly recommend getting a kit with a float, and properly cleaning the carb. what idle screw are you mentioning? is it the slow speed needle on the front of the carb?

nwcove, yes its the slow speed needle on the front of the carb that I was talking about. The one with the adjustment knob on the front of the motor. It still has the original float and gaskets in it. My neighbor said the float and gaskets all looked good. He said it just had some black looking stuff in the carb that was causing the float to stick. Where would you recommend getting a kit at. I didn't see one on iboats. I saw one at ********** but it didn't have a float in the kit. Also, would you recommend a sierra or mallory kit. I think that was the two brands I saw on **********. Do you know a better place to buy one.

Thanks

Not sure why the name of the other place where I saw the parts didn't show up. Only showed up as ********. Anyhow it was b----.net. He did say that the gasket or seal on the slow speed needle fell apart when he took it out of the carb so it wasn't replaced but it isn't leaking any gas.

Does anyone have a service manual on this motor, model 6R71G. If so, could you send me the section on the carb.

Thanks

1966 Evinrude model 6603 rebuild

Might help

:)

Also, if you order an Evinrude kit, it'll include the float.

I'm guessing the seat and float are bad.
Ive seen it a lot where the seats float hole was widened a little bit, thus not cutting of the flow of gas. (again, a blind guess)

Re: Carb help needed on 1971 6 HP

BigB9000 seems to cover all the bases including photo rebuild of the carb....the "gasket" material that fell out when the idle mixture needle was removed serves to create an airtight seal so fuel mixture will be forced into the idle circuit of the carb, no fuel mixture ever reaches that area without it being sealed, so you can expect that you won't see any mix leaking out around the needle. And yes, w/o a good seal it will contribute to a hard or no start condition.

omc part # 0439071 will include the float, or sierra ( uap napa) part number 18-7043 is the kit, and omc part # 0396514 is the float. 0439071 is your best bet.

Re: Carb help needed on 1971 6 HP

Here are some videos on how to clean and apply a carburetor kit for an OMC high speed fix jet carburetor. Displayed motors are 1968 Johnson 6hp and 1964 Evinrude 18hp outboards. The videos are very long and over detailed, but I want to help those who are new/novices to motor repair. Again, I am no expert or certified marine mechanic, but I am offering video to help.
