Hello all

I want to take the carb off my 1969 6hp Johnson and clean it. Do I have to remove that recoil starter to do it? I do not have much access to the right nut on the carb. If I do need to remove it, is there a easy way to do it without uncoiling that spring inside the recoil? I've had to replace one and it's no fun.

Also, what size ID do I need for the fuel line from the carb to fuel pump?

Thanks,
Gary

Remove the screws holding the starter's upper bearing plate to the motor. Lift the starter just enough to pull it out of the lower bearing (about 1/2"), then tilt it aside. Go ahead and do your carb work. No it won't fly apart if you followed instructions.

are you experiencing carb issues or just doing maintenance..in case.

you may be able to get way with just blasting the lower jet (do not remove it) behind the bolt at the bottom and..gently unscrewing the top needle and give a good shot of carb cleaner to purge the LS circuit.

wear eye protection.

if things don't work out ..pull /clean the carb and starter which you may be able to just tilt it a bit to reach the carb nut.

do the easy stuff first !

Use a small screwdriver and hammer to take the nut off.-----No need to touch the starter that way.--------Put nut back on and give it bump to tighten.-----Method approved by owner of shop over 50 years ago.,-----Family still runs the shop today.-----Crude yes, but a big time saver in the day.

thanks for the replies. I need to replace the carb gasket as it leaks.

Can you all tell me what size fuel line I need from the carb to the fuel pump?

Thanks again,
Gary
