I am new to these boards, but my husband and I bought a boat this year and we are trying to learn. We are having issues with our carb. We have replaced all the hoses and gaskets. Now for my questions:)

When we try/do start out motor, gas is pouring out of a small hole on the carb. We are not sure what this hole is for, as we are a little clueless, but it is supposed to be there. We were wondering if replacing the needle and float would do something to correct this?

I am also wondering if a 1963 johnson outboard carb for a 35hp would be compatable with our 1965 40 hp?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the float valve isn't closing properly, and fuel flows out the air vent above the float. Get a carb kit from BRP (they have the float included). Be sure to blow out all passages, and replace needle jet packing washers.

There is no such thing as a 1963 Johnson 35hp.

1963 would be 40hp, not 35hp. If it is a carb from a 1963 40hp, I believe the choke is different from a 1965. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think '63 was the last year of the hot water choke.

Thanks so much! Some guy offered us the carb off of his 63, but if there is no such thing, you saved me from a mistake.
