Will it hurt to soak the brass jets in paint thinner overnight? They have a lot of varnish on them....or other recommendations??

Can't hurt brass jets with solvent. Just don't go poking stiff wire through them.

When you say paint thinner, I assume you mean Lacquer Thinner. Some of the aerosol can carb cleaners are really good at dissolving varnish too.

Nylon fishing line can help and not scratch the inside of the jet like metal wire can.

^^agree. I also have some "special" soft wire I use. You might want to leave the jets in place for soaking -- easily damaged in removal or replacement, particularly if the carb is pretty varnished up. Just soak upper and lower carb halves, removing non-metal parts. (would remove the domed fittings to soak, but leave throttle or choke springs/linkages in place.) Finish with carb spray, using the plastic nozzle.

I use lacquer thinner lots of times cleaning carbs. It does a pretty good job. Typical spray carb cleaner and/or brake part cleaner (basically the exact same thing) does a great job as well. But don't use stiff wire or metal picks to poke through the jet opening to clean them out. They are drilled to very precision sizes and it doesn't take hardly anything to damage that sized opening and make for a crappy running carb. Just be careful to not soak any plastic or rubber parts in any type cleaner. If you do, those parts can literally disappear from dissolving. JMHO
