I'm getting a '67 Merc 1100SS (110hp) out of storage (wasn't stored right, wasn't me). I figure it needs a good tune up and a carb job. I noticed that this inline 6 has 3 carbs.

I know on motorcycles that have multiple carbs you need to sync them after rebuilding them. Does this hold true on boat motors as well?

What are some of your tricks that you might have for syncing carbs? I want to get it tune in right but I've never sync carbs before.

I have rebuilt carbs before but they have all been on a single carb unit.

Thanks! I just can't wait to get this thing on the water...

One other quick question to satisfy my curiousity. The motor is a "Kiefmaefer" model. What does this mean?

I'm geussing it is just a advertising gimick of the day, but I'm still curious...

Thanks again!

You just need to make sure all three carbs open and close fully at the same time. Start from the top down when making sure the throttle plates are in synch.

After that search this forum for my "timing and synch" post. Get a manual and get your exact date of manufacture from old merc.com you will need the serial #. I have a '67 95hp and luckily haven't had to rebuild the carbs even after extended storage (6yrs at one point). Read, Read, Read - get to know the motor before fixing anything, if it ain't broke (carbs not leaking) DON"T FIX IT! It will surprise you and start. other than changing the oil in the lower unit and changing the impeller every other season these babies can really keep you happy, as there is vurtually no other maintenance. My engine has been in the family for over 30yrs - Lots of very good memories and none of them were ever engine problems - battery yes engine no.

That said... if one carb is gummed up at all , and the other two are OK.... it can run fine......... right up to the point it melts down the two pistons running lean.

Particularly the 1100, with the largest diamater piston of any of the inlines.

-W
