I just got a carb kit and it seems not to be the correct one. Its from Sierra part number 187043. It doesn't have the rubber packing for the needles. Is this the correct part number with parts missing?

Re: Carb kit for 18hp 58 Fastwin

I'm doing my 67 18hp carb and I'm totally disappointed in the Sierra carb kit (that I've been anxiously awaiting for 5 days).

I expect any slightly generic carb kit might have extra or weird parts, but this thing is a joke. The packing washer for the needle valve is either not included, or totally wrong. The kit has 6 fiber washers all the same size, none of which fit the valve. The new float pin was too big to clear the carb body recess. There's a couple of o-rings included that don't seem to be for anything. The directions are an utter joke. It's such a simple carb, I would not care, if only the parts matched the originals.

They should at least provide the minimal parts that are needed. Or don't sell it. Next time, I won't buy Sierra.

Re: Carb kit for 18hp 58 Fastwin

I just put the same Sierra kit into my '58 Fastwin last week. The burnt orange packing washers are a bit odd looking and seem to be a bit brittle. I put a bit of light (3-n-1) oil on the washers before I installed. They work fine (so far). I used two per needle. I agree that there is no use for the rubber o-rings and a couple of metal compression washers/retainers. I did not like the way the washer for the new float valve seat looked, so I used the old one. I had the motor on the lake yesterday and it worked fine.

I also purchased a new (non-cork) float from an Evinrude dealer.

Now that I found a local dealer, I will probably not order the Sierra kit in the future.
