I'm planning on rebuilding my carbs on my 1977 Mercury 850 85 hp. What's the ideal way to disconnect the linkage between the carbs? Is the linkage attached to the timing setup and if i remove the carbs do i need to reset the timing? My Seloc manual is not clear on the linkage at all, any tips or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's hard to see the pic but the linkage between the carbs is a plastic piece and the top of the upper carb attaches to ???

Re: carb linkage

Generally remove the carbs with the linkage and fuel lines attached and then disassemble as required, removing the carbs does not affect the timing, however, the synchronizing between the carbs and the linkage will be disturbed and a link an sync will be required. There is a sticky in the FAQ regarding the procedure.

BE CAREFUL with that thing, it breaks easy. Fortunately they are still available, about $16. Remove the screw on the bottom, remove the top carb first, gently lift it up and off.

Ray, look on crowleymarine.com web site for the parts for that motor. I do not think the part from the '77 motor is the one you want.

I think that it was Crowley Marine where I got it but Chris1956 is probably correct, a different part number. Once you know the right part number just Google it.

Re: carb linkage

Got the carbs off to rebuild but will probably have a shop do the link & sync. Does anyone know of a youtube link showing the link & sync procedure? I understand visual over words. I searched but might have used the wrong wording. Thanks again.

Re: carb linkage

Got the carbs back on and synced then went for test ride. The motor idled really smooth with idle screws 1 turn out but after about 10 minutes it wanted to bog and die upon acceleration from a stop. I turned the mixture screws out to 1 3/4 and now it shakes pretty bad but doesn't stall out. Anyone experience this? I haven't had a chance to get back out and i just wanted to hear from the more experienced mercury owners.

Re: carb linkage

KRS, Normally the carb is set to between 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 turns out. These are inexact because it really depends on the motor and carb. I recommend you adjust the carbs for fastest and smoothest running. Now they are likely too lean, but synched. Now richen 1/8 turn on top carb and try acceleration. Repeat with bottom carb. Repeat sequence until you have good smooth acceleration and reasonable idle.
