I have a 85 hp force it has a broken pin on the shaft that goes from the carb linkage up towards the fly wheel. Do I have to take off the fly wheel to get the shaft out were I can replace the pin its on the bottom of the shaft. Thanks for any info

Do you mean the tower shaft that goes from the bottom to the top of the engine?

That's the only shaft with a spring pin that is associated with the linkage.

You can loosen the clamp that holds it in place and see if it lifts enough to allow you room
to work at getting the pin out.
If not then you might have to remove the flywheel??
I have a set of small punches that get down to the pins size.
Or use the new spring pin to drive the old one out.

Any idea why or how it broke?(curious)

It is the tower shaft That I am talking about, I have only taken it out a few times since I got it used. I ask the PO if he had any trouble with that in the past, he said he had not. I'm not sure what caused it to break, it didn't look like it had been messed with. The rest of the pins all look OK, I will loosen the clamp that holds it in place and see if I can get it out that way before I pull the fly wheel. Thanks for the info

Shifting without the prop turning or while the motor's off puts strain on those parts.

I finally got it apart the roll pins were broke into 4 pieces, so it wouldn't turn with the shaft. Should I get a new key for the fly wheel before I put it back on, I am having trouble getting it to stay in place while I put the fly wheel back on. I know most half moon keys have a dent on the back of them so it will stay in the key way. This one will not stay in place at all when you let go of it. Thanks again for the help
