Hello all

I am having a issue with my 1984 50HP Evinrude. It want to fall on it face per say when you try to do a hole shot from idle. Here is what i have done so far. I took both carbs off and completely took apart and soaked over night in sea foam and carb cleaner. Took air compressor and blew out the carbs. Put the carbs back together. Went to the lake started off fine ran great. After about 30 min, shut it off fishe for a while. Started it back up let motor warm up. Opened to WOT and boat stumbled and died. Re started the motor. slowly went to WOT ran great. Does anyone have a clue to what and why this is happening. The only thing i havent done is bought all new parts for the carbs. thats the next step i see if i can't fix it another way. really dont want to spend 100 dollars and it not fix the issue. Any help would be great

Thanks

Re: Carb Prob

It sounds like you still have a carb problem, you might try removing the high speed jets and see if there is any trash in them. You should also do a link & synk when you are done.

Just one quick question! You said that you took your carbs apart, did you actaully take the "jets" out and clean the orfices with "wire" followed with compressed air.

Re: Carb Prob

If the nozzle gasket is leaking it will cause problems like your describing.
The nozzle gasket is the dime sized rubber gasket that slides up the stem housing of the low speed jet. The stem in the bowl mates up to it.

It sounds like you could be loosing a cylinder, spark that is. Let the motor cool off for a while then try it again, when it warms up see if it craps out, put a timing light on it while running it , on one plug wire then the other. AKA coil or power pack.

Re: Carb Prob

Thank you all for the advise. The only pieces i didn't take off were the ones that are behind the little sliver push in washers. The carbs i am guessing havn't been rebuilt since 1984. I am going to try that next. I did put a timing light on bothe cylinders and both re fireing fine. there are no adjustments on these carbs. the liknage on the carbs are perfect. I have replace the fuel lins on bot carbs with high preformance lines. the motor had a complete tune up in the spring. new plugs, and wires. If rebuilding the carbs dont work? is there something else i can check? could the intake need to be resealed? other then sprayin the motor with wd-40 while it is running to see if the crank case is leaking is there other tale tale signe i need to look for?

Thanks again for the help

Sounds like you still have a carb or link/synk problem. I would pull the high speed jets and check them for contamination.

Re: Carb Prob

Isn't a stumble when opening the throttle an idle circuit problem? Normally I would think the idle mixture is too lean due to dirt, not allowing for the rich mixture needed for acceleration. If it were me, I would concentrate on the idle circuits. They have the smallest jets and air holes, and therefore clog easiest. Also, bad gaskets can allow air to bypass the carb passages, imitating a lean mixture.
