carb problem?

hi im new to the site but see yall are very informative so maybe yall could help me out,my carb on my 1980 140hp evinrude is leaking and was wondering how easy is it to work on carbs,ive never touched a carb in my life,i called a shop but they said theyll probably charge $700 and i cant afford that,thanks for yalls help.also if you knew a cheap mechanic in the austin texas area id appreciate it.

Those carburetors are arguably the simplest to work on of any, having all fixed jets and little plastic. If you use a factory service manual and a new kit for each carburetor and follow the manual, you should find the process easy enough.

When you have the carburetors off it is good practice to replace the carburetor fuel lines and clamps which is where many leaks originate.

You might also want to consider taking the carburetors off and having your mechanic rebuild them; It's a totally different pricing issue since it takes longer to remove and replace them than it does to rebuild them.
