Carb problem

Hey Guys

Got a problem starting my engine. It is a V8 Volvo Penta 5 ltr petrol.

Engine was running until I noticed the electric wire to the Automatic choke was broken off. I tool the automatic choke assembly off the carb and fixed it. When I put it back on the engine wont start. I have looked at the carb flaps and they seem to be staying open. No matter how I fix the spring to fit on the automatic choke spindle the choke flaps still seem to remain open. I have turned the automatic choke housing to close the flaps but the minute I touch the throttle the flaps stick open and wont close.

I have tried starting the engine many times to the point of flattening the battery. I have recharged the battery and decided to go the opposite way and check for a spark at the plugs. I used the spark plug tester and there is a spark from all 8 spark plugs. There is plenty of fuel, the Rochester carb has 2 jets and there are 2 good streams of fuel into the carb. Removed the spark plugs again there is fuel on 7 plugs but number 1 spark plug is dry !!

What would be the reason for no fuel on number 1 spark plug ? Is there a way to fix the automatic choke ( maybe a manual) ? or am I going totally crazy ?

Any help would be appreciated guys

What is the full model number or the serial number for your engine. At this point, we don't have a clue if you have a Ford or Chevy, let alone year or which carb you have.

The choke coil is probably shorted out and needs replaced. they are not repairable.

Re: Carb problem

Hi Don S

Thanks for the reply. Been at it all weekend but no luck. It is a Volvo Penta 200d. It is a Rochester 2BBL carb. Not sure if it is the choke or not. Did the spark plug test again and there is a yellow spark from all the plugs, also tested the coil and there is a yellow spark coming from it. Not sure if it should be a blue spark.

Totally baffled now

Re: Carb problem

Have you done a full tuneup? including Points, condenser, cap, rotor. all of which can cause poor or no spark. They are a maintenance type item.

With yellow spark, it's not going to start properly.
