Carb Problems

I had another thread about my ignition problems, but that seems to be solved. I have a 1987 Mercruiser 3.0l, S/N B515220, with a mercarb 2 bbl.

Took the boat out today to test my ignition system, i wasn't getting any spark as the engine got hot. Ran it around the lake for awhile and pulled back into the dock and shut it down. Low and behold I had the same problem. The boat would not fire up. I checked for spark coming from the coil with an inline spark tester, looked good. I pulled the flame arrestor off and tried to fire the boat up like that, to no avail. tried with no throttle, full throttle, half throttle, with no luck. I did notice that after cranking it, with the throttle back in neutral position, that there were drips of fuel leaking out of what I believe are the jets.(please correct me if I am wrong, I am not to good when it comes to carbs) I would imagine that this is not supposed to happen, but could someone please confirm.

Should I get the carb rebuilt, or purchase a new one?

Thanks to any who can offer help.

Re: Carb Problems

There is only one supreme, master carb expert who can give you advise on this forum.

No one else, don't know nothing, never knew nothing, and will never know nothing about carbs but him.

Maybe he will conjure himself here to reply to your post.

Update....

After doing some research I know that the fuel was dripping from the venturi cluster. Once again thanks to anyone who can help.

Second Update...

After further research on this forum, I have come to the conclusion that my carb needs a rebuild. Searching for carb dripping fuel type problems, I ran into many posts that have a similar problem to my Hot restart problem. That in addition to the pure fuel that appeared to be blowing out of my prop this morning, have led me to this conclusion.

The kit should be here tomorrow. Although I have never rebuilt a carb before, I have spent the last 7 years rebuilding and calibrating diesel fuel injection pumps. So hopefully, i will be successful in my venture.

If anyone out there can offer me any tips or guidance, it would still be appreciated. Thank you.

I will post an update when I finish to let people know the outcome.

Re: Carb Problems

It would be good to invest in a gallon of carb cleaner - the kind that comes with a little basket that you soak parts in. A good air compressor is a must as well. You will need to blow out the various passages.

Take your time and be meticulous and you should do fine.

Re: Carb Problems

Well the project may almost be complete. Rebuilt the carb last night installed it this morning. After cleaning the plugs and blowing the access fuel out of the cylinders, the boat fired up within 10 secs of turning the key. That in itself is a good sign. I guess the only thing left to do is make the final adjustments with the engine warm. and then of course the ultimate test, does the boat start again once it gets warm. We shall see.

To Be Continued......

Re: Carb Problems

Took the boat out on the water yesterday, for the final test. Boat fired right up. I took it on a 25 min cruise at near fullthrottle before returning to the dock. Shut her down and waited. Went to start her back up, and presto, fired up quick!. Did the same run again, with the same results.

It would appear that the problem is solved.
