Carb problems

We've been trying to get the boat started the past couple weeks. The boat ran before we bought it, but it has sat for little over a year. It's a 69 starcraft, a 120hp GM motor, and a Rochester 2 jet Carb.

We've gone over most it looking for the problem. It almost sounds like it's not getting any fuel, which would make us think it is the pump. But the first three times we tried to get it started it was spitting fuel three feet out the top of the carb, so I don't think it's the pump.

When I look at the side of the carb, it just looks to me, like somebody made a mess of the springs and linkage, but I have yet to see the side of a matching carb that runs. I took some pictures of the side of my carb. You can find them here with the pictures of the boat. Carb Pictures Am I right? Anybody got some pictures of what it should look like.

Anybody know where I can get the right springs and a Rebuild kit for this carb.

Thanks for any help
Jason

Re: Carb problems

That carb is similar to mine but yours is a lot older. It seems ok to me although it's set up a bit different. Which linkage is concerning you? For a rebuild kit, get the carb # (possibly on the outside bowl area near the fuel inlet). Try the link below and look for a match. Then do a Google search on Sierr'a part#. Also, I hear NAPA can get them. I'd say you're do for a rebuild (or replacement) if gas is shooting up 3ft!
www.sierramarine.com/catalog_pdf/Sierra_8023-83.pdf

Re: Carb problems

If gas is shooting up three feet I would suspect a stuck intake valve. Rust on the guides will cause this. Has a plastic bag been tied over the flame arrester while it has sat for a year? Rain water could get into the engine and cause valves to rust as well as rings and cylinder walls.

Re: Carb problems

Check spark, compression, timing. If this is all good then pull the carb and dissasemble. These are easy carbs. You wil probably find junk built up there from sitting.
Check feul at the line to the carb to make certain your getting feul from the pump.
