Carb Question

:)I'm rebuilding my 1985 Yamaha 40-ELK carburetors and I need to purchase replacement O-rings, however the detail shown for the float bowl O-ring in the online Yamaha OEM catalog doesn't look like what I have. On the online parts list detail the float bowl O-ring is round. The O-rings on my float bowls are round with a flat spot that is about an inch long. On flat spot are two round lobes side by side, one slighty larger than the other. Everything thing else on the carburetor detail matches what I have. Is it possible the drawings aren't totally accurate? Does anyone have experience with making their own O-rings from something similiar to liquid gasket (if a product even exist)? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Carb Question

I now have another problem. I put the carbs back on the motor while I wait for my replacement o-rings to come in (existing o-rings were still in good shape for now) and fired the engine up. I had some lean popping so I adjusted the air screws to richen it up some. She was purring like a kitten..no smoke..etc. I look down in the water flowing down the driveway and it looks like a huge oil slick. I take a closer look and black oil that smells strongly like gas is coming out of my prop. Carbs are in great shape and none of the floats were sticking when i checked. I know some unburned oil is normal, but this is to much extra oil for that. Any ideas?

Re: Carb Question

Check the fuel pump for ruptured diaphragm.

How far out did you set the screws?

I have seen lots of black goo come out of the prop when de-carbonizing a motor with sea foam, but only a little after motor sat for a while after running rich.

What did you find out about the shape of the o-rings

Re: Carb Question

1-1/2 turns out from seated.

I'm checking the fuel pump now. Thanks for the suggestion.

I went ahead and ordered the round o-ring in hopes it was drawn wrong. A buddy told me that with car parts he often sees contradictions between the details in the parts list and what is actually there. I'll let you know what I end up with.

Re: Carb Question

Replaced fuel pump today. Fired motor up on muffs and fuel still flows from the prop. Boat idles and planes out with no problem (haven't had it back on the water since I first noticed fuel leak). Heres a couple things I figure the problem might be..

  • stuck float
  • bad o-ring on float bowl
  • broke reed valve

Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions?
