I have am trying a carb rebuild of my 1988 140 Johnson. I read the top secret file, but my carbs seem to be a little different (black plastic and no low speed jet on top) I have it torn down most of the way and gotten the high speed jet out from behind the bowl screw.

Now where is the low speed jet to take out and soak? There are two little pipes that sick down from the carb throut into a resuvior that goes into the boawl via the high speed jet. Are THESE (ie two of them) the low speed jets? Shoud I pull them out with pliers to soak (not suppose to soak the black plastic right?)? If I pull them out, how do I know how far back in to put them?

Thanks for any advice.

ok, cool. those are the TWO low speed jets right?

Ill skick a strand of wire through there, but NOT take them out and soak them in carb cleaner then.

Thanks

I have access to a sonic cleaner at my shop that did wonders on mine. You could try spraying some carb cleaner thru all the ports than hit it with air.

The low/intermediate jets themselves are on the front of the carb body. Two brass screw in plugs with small holes in them. You can remove them with a slotted (Flat) screwdriver.

I use an aerosol can of carb cleaner that you can put one of those little plastic pipes on to reach tough places. Spray the carb cleaner in the all the openings in the carb body. When you spray it in the jet openings, you should see some of it come out the pipes you were referring to. Also, make certain that the holes in the jets themselves are perfectly clean and free of debris. Then blast it all again with compressed air.

Be sure to use new gaskets when reassembling.

Good luck!

wear glasses if you don't know where a spray is gonna exit, you spray it in here but it comes out there right in the kissa.:D

the factory manual warns against using harsh cleaners, many a plastic bowl has been warped by soaking, I did use carb spray though. It seems to vaporize instantly, right into my lungs I bet.

Just did mine 140 with same 4 plastic carbs. Just replaced all parts the came with kits..Blow out carbs with air..imprtant to adjust all floats..and put together. Did not use any cleaners and they work great. Might want to check all your plug wires, had issues with mine.
