Carb Rebuild Question

Cleaned and rebuilt the carbs in my 1985 Evinrude 70 hp (E70ELCOS) 3 cyl. From what I read on here and in the Tdaddy's top secret file, I should be able to blow into the fuel nipple and air should blow out of the carb. My question is how much effort should it take to do this???

On all 3 of the carbs, if I turn them upside down so the needle is down in the seat, I cannot blow air into the carb. If I flip them right side up, I can only blow air through the carb using a great amount of effort and with very little air flowing through. I'm thinking you should be able to blow through them with little effort. Is that correct? If it is, where is the most likely place they are obstructed?

Those float valves don't open very wide when they're open. You shouldn't be able to blow a large volume of air through them quickly. If you can puff a little air through them w/o exerting too much effort then I'd say you're ok. If not, then your float needles are probably sticking. Did you use the clip that holds them to the float tab?

Re: Carb Rebuild Question

Thanks Iwom. Yes, I used new clips and the valves appear to be raising and lowering properly. I can puff a small amount of air through them, but definitely only a small amount.

Re: Carb Rebuild Question

Did you replace the valves or remove them to check that there isn't junk partially blocking them?
