I am taking a shot at rebuilding my Rochester Quadreajet 4 brl manual choke on my 5.7 350 OMC engine. I ordered a float kit and rebuild kit to be here tomorrow, so in anticipation I took off the carb and disasembled so I could dunk and clean it. The engine would run great above 1000 rpm, but would not idle at 650. Some things I found.

Primary needles(those connected to the brass rod that has a spring underneath under the arm end of the float) which is supposedly supposed to spring up and down freely was totally gummed up and jammed, no play in it at all.

Also, other than the one o-ring gasket at the bottom of the other brass fitting toward the primary jet chamber(the one you need a really wide blade screwdriver to remove) and the accelerator pump rubber plunger, I did not see any other rubber parts to remove prior to cleaning.

Is this normal? Seems after consulting a bunch of websits on carb rebuilding and viewing a lot of kits, there are quite a few small rubber rings and seals in a carb that I did not see.

Re: Carb Rebuild Questions

Mahoney, Watch for the steel ball bearings. Note where they come from, so you can replace them properly. Also the rebuild kit (that I got for ~$20) had gaskets, accelerator pump, needle and seat. It did not have too many major replacement parts.

Re: Carb Rebuild Questions

Hmm, I did not see any steel ball bearings in my carb. The one piece I have yet to remove is the brass chamber where the little small float cylinder is housed. Everything else internal was removed and I did not see any steel bearings. Where are these located?
