An auto parts store can sell you a little kit that includes a bucket, strainer and the cleaning solution. Just make sure you tell them you are working on aluminum carbs.

I would get a manual. They are availbale at the bottom of the iboats header page. Nice to have.

Tie,it relly is a good idea to get a manual. The original OMC service manual is the best. One thing i found when i rebuilt mine was that someone just put the jets back in without regard to their proper location.I have same engine as you do.Mine has 20 inch transom.According to manual on 20" transom the jet are as follows:lower carb port side.030" lower carb starboard side .027" upper carb port side .028" upper carb starboard.029" If you have a 25 inch transom the only differance would be lower carb port side would be .033".Another thing make sure float is parallel to gasket surface with the carb upside down. they are not really that hard to do but make sure you have a good clean surace to work on when you reassemble them.Hope this helps,, Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Tie,

When you are disassembling/reassembling the carbs, do it over a cookie sheet or something similar. If you are like me, you'll fumble a jet and then spend 20 minutes looking for it on the floor. A pan with ridges helps catch everything.

My wife gets pretty ticked when I start raiding her kitchen for stuff, so I'd suggest stealing your tray covertly.

Good luck.

Re: Carb rebuild tips

I also have some carb rebuilding questions so I hope you don't mind I ask here,

I'm about to rebuild my spare carb that I bought used for 74 85HP V4 . in the OMC manual it calls for special tool #317002 fixed jet screw driver. the pictures in the manual show this screw driver inserted into the carb so I can't really see the tip of this thing. is this really a special tool or just a regular flat head screw driver but a special size? thanks

Re: Carb rebuild tips

I use a small flat head screwdriver on my main jets and it seems to work just fine.

Cheers.
