Carb Rebuilds

I've searched through the posts on this board and read through my repair manual. I'm pretty sure my carbs need to be removed, cleaned and rebuilt on my 1996 Johnson 112 SPL. Rebuild kits are available at one of the local dealers. I am concerned that I may not have the reqiuired tools to properly do this rebuild myself (OMC Orifice Driver & float gauge). I asked the dealer if I could just bring in the carbs and let them rebuild them for me, so I would not have to bring the whole boat in. He told me they would need to perform the linkage syncs and could not just rebuild the carbs. Since idle, off idle and hi speed fuel mixtures are controled by fixed orifices, looks like the only connections and syncs would be the throttle valves. I called another dealer who said they would just rebuild the carbs. I would really prefer not to strip all my fishing equip and electronics off the boat if not absolutely necessary. Would I be safe to remove the carbs, have them rebuilt then re-install myself, then sync the throttle valves or does the dealer really need the whole engine to do it right? First dealer said three weeks waiting period and second said they could get do the carbs in a week. What should I do?

Re: Carb Rebuilds

this is a good question. if the first dealer has a test tank/prop
and can fine tune her "under load" (or on a dyno)
then that's the way I would go. if not, then I would
choose #2, you will save all the labor of r/r
the carbs @ $75/hr, but will need to fine tune
it anyways.
good luck,
M.Y.

For what it's worth, I'm a noice and rebuilt my carbs without any great difficulties. Just followed the manual and used stardard tools (basically a flat head screwdriver and typical socket set).

I'd never actually seen a carb before attemping this.

Good Luck!

When you remove them, be sure to Mark everything that you can on the Carb with a Marker(Sharpie) having to do with the linkage! It will help you greatly when you put them back on. It may not get you perfectly in Sync, but it will get you back to where you were! Also note the # of turns that any mixture screws are turned out from the seated position, when you remove them! Good Luck,
