So I'm going to pull the carbs on my 69 650 and take them in for rebuild. It looks to me like the front plate, distributor, and coil will probably have to come off first. Anything else? Any pitfalls I need to be aware of? I've tried to find a manufacturers shop manual for my engine but have so far been unsuccessful. Where is the best place to find rebuild kits that would have everything needed? It seems to be running rich at sea level which makes it many times worse up at our cabin at 3700 ft elevation. It started right up after sitting all winter and the only issue when running is slow getting to plane and a bit of a fuel sheen in the water when stopped so I don't think there could be much else wrong with it. Thanks for any help.

The manual for your engine is:

90-68647

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=90-68647

In the interim here is a condensed version of the Clymer manual which may assist you. Let the page load for several seconds and download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

Your engine is a model:

1650109 MERCURY 1969 65

Re: Carb removal 69 650 4cyl

Thanks for the help. I got the carbs off-not a lot of fun but not as bad as I had envisioned either. I'm going to have them rebuilt professionally as I don't want to have to repeat the re+re process anytime soon. Any recomendations on carb kits? Are the 2 listed on this website good? Carbs are tillotsen KC11A. By the way, I checked the compression before starting the job and it was 125 on 1,2,+4 and 118 on 3 so I thought there couldn't be much wrong internally with the old motor.
Thanks for any suggestions.
