Carb removal on 81' 7.5 HP

I need to remove the carb to clean/rebuild it on my 7.5 HP evinrude. It looks pretty tough to get to the port side bolt. Anybody have any tips/tricks to remove?

You need to remove the starter recoil assembly to get the carb off.

Looks that way, but it seems to get pretty involved for two nuts, poor design.
