Carb. Replacement Vs Rebuild

I have a 1996 6hp (model 6MLHU) O/B with a carburetor that needs to either be rebuilt or replaced. I was given a rebuild kit from the previous owner but don't know if I have the tools or the expertise (or courage) to tackle the job myself. A mechanic quoted me $150(minimum) labor to do the job. (I'd really like to tackle the work myself but am afraid of getting in "over my head") If I just replaced the carb with a new one would it require adjustments that I'd need special tools to perform? The previous owner has a Yamaha service manual for the motor that I can purchase.
Any advice would be VERY much appreciated. Thank you. Bill

Get the manual for your motor. read up on all the different things that need to be done and how to do them. cleaning a carb is not a hard thing to do and you should be able to do it yourself and so are the adjustments after.

Like 99yam40 said, not a hard thing do to at all. When you remove it to intall a new kit your not completly tearing it down. Most of the pressed in, factory set parts won't be taken out, mainly just the gaskets and seals. Just remember where you got the parts from and make sure your putting the right parts back in those places. I put a light coat of grease on my seals so they are less prone to leaking and the next time you rebuld it, the gaskets and seals will come out without leaving half of them behind. The main thing is to buy a couple of cans of carb cleaner and spray it through all the ports and jets, then blow out the carb, holes and ports with compressed air to clean everything. When you get it all back together just follow the procedures in your manual to set the carb and you be good as gold. Nothing at all to be scared of, and the price of the manual and the cleaner is FAR less than the price of tech to rebuild it.

No special tools are needed.
I do not recommend the use of spray cleaners. They are not always capable of removing the shellac, brown goo, left by today's lousy gasoline. In addition, the sprays damage any plastic parts and can damage the finishes used on many parts. I use the Gunk brand carb and parts cleaner which comes in a gallon can with a parts basket. All the screw in jets need to be removed and soaked along with the body parts. Use in accordance with the instructions on can. In addition I use my ultrasonic cleaner but frankly I have never had a problem when I only had the Gunk product.
The spray cleaner is only for use on the outside of automotive carbs and then with great care.
The suggestion of a manual is a good one. You can do very little without one.

see?
and I rarely ever use a soak tank, however with this new fuel blend I do a pre cleaning with Yamaha combustion chamber cleaner.
its a fairly simple carb.
if yours has the carb mounted fuel pump be very very careful not to break off the plastic nipple on it.
if yours uses the carb mounted fuel pump also be aware that none of the pump gaskets or diaphrams are contained in the carb kit.
I have used the ultra sound and it works well.

Rodbolt, I was just wondering what kind of cleaning solution do you use in the ultra sound tank when cleaning the carbs?
