carb spacer

On 4 barrel mercruiser with Weber carbs, was the carb spacer/adapter only used to make the carb fit the spread bore intake? Or was there another reason?

As far as I can tell it is just an adapter to make the Weber/ Carter AFB/ Edelbrock fit the q-jet intake, guaranteed it will disrupt airflow and cost horses,Q-jet carb is the answer.

Actually i have an aftermarket square bore intake to fit the Edelbrock/Weber so I dont need the adapter anyway, I was looking at it more from an insulator stand point. But from what i can gather, heat isnt a big issue and a spacer isnt needed.
