Hello.

I have a question regarding carburetor types. As I have mentioned in other previous threads, I currently am running a '84 75 HP Merc, after changing from a 70's 850 85 Hp. The 85 wasn't worth repairing so I am scavenging any parts for the 75 that I can.

My question is, are different carb types interchangeable? I have the Seloc manual that covers both of these motors. According to their specs, and by actually looking at the carbs, I have concluded that my 85 used "Type A" carbs, with the side bowl. and my 75 has "Type C", centre square bowl. The specs in the manual say that 850's used Type A from '73 to '75, then switched to Type C in '76. I imagine that there is something that the Type C can do that the Type A can't, but any ideas would be great.

Also, since I have your attention, I am trying to figure out the year of the 85hp. The serial number starts with 701.... The last year these motors were made was '77, and my Seloc manual says that serial numbers for the latest 850's begin with 459.... I had assumed that the motor was a '77, but since the carbs are a different type, I am confused. I am sort of thinking that the serial number issue has to do with the motor being from Canada, and the Seloc manual is more US oriented. Otherwise, is it possible that it used to have Type C carbs and was retro-fitted with Type A? That's where my curiosity about interchanging the carbs on my 75 comes from.

Thanks again for all your help!
