My dealer rcommended an OMC product called Carbon Guard to minimize and prevent carbon build up for 2-stroke outboard engines. At $10 for 12 fl oz, it's priced like scotch. Any use or experience with the effectiveness of this stuff? Apparently also useful for 4-strokes according to the label.

Hi Boatneck,
That stuff works great if you follow the directions on the can. If it has to do with anything that floats, it's going to be pricey.
Good Luck

Re: Carbon Guard

I have a friend who runs one of the best outboard shops in this area. He gets a lot of powerhead work from people who DON'T use carbon guard. With the new oils, the need is not as great as it used to be but he recommends the full decarbonizing treatment every 50 running hours or so. My motor is 11 years old and runs like new, thanks to his advice. When you consider what new pistons or powerheads cost, the carbon guard is cheap. Incidently, his second biggest source of income is cleaning carbs where they have set up all winter with old gas in them.

That little bottle treats a lot of gas! I dumped some in my old truck too (V6 F.I.) I swear it's running better! Anyway, it's cheap insurance for your boat.

Re: Carbon Guard

For carbon guard you might try Carquest they have more outboard Parts and fuel additives than I ever thought possible for a car parts store. Myself I will go there first from now on. Jim
