Mechanics that suggest it could be the Carbs scare me silly. I have owned many different carb engines and never was that the problem. Weak spark and fuel presure thats the ticket.

Hi Fishmaster
With engines that are used on a regluar basis, I might agree with you. With engines that set for extended periods, the carb is almost always a problem. Did a 10hp yesterday, did my 4barrel on my pick-up today, Got a 5hp to do tomorrow. Now that 10hp had ignition problems also. I agree a person must diagnose the problem before tearing into anything. By the way, I with I was as lucky as you, I hate cleaning carbs.

I agree with "my new fishmaster" carbs give little trouble........its the soured fuel and garbage that gets in them that causes the trouble....the carbs themselves are fine :)

Well, I disagree with both of you. I agree with Alcan on this one.

Open your blinders a bit more and look at the small engines that sit up for 6 mo to 10 years between uses. They really do outnumber the bigger mid range and BIG engines by quite a wide margin.

Hmmm. Schematic.

I call a carb problem one that requires work on the carb.

I agree that only rarely is the mechanism at fault, but if you gotta take it apart and clean it, I still call it a carb problem. :)

All,

Carbs. can be troublesome. As mentioned earlier, it's not particularly the carb. it's the junk that gets left in them. We all have to remember that outboards have another element added to the fuel that really helps gum things up-oil!

Another point, boat fuel systems are not as sophisticated as auto. Boats do not have evaporative emission systems that draw off vapors and the like. Boats just sit there and collect all sorts of trash in the tanks.

Last point, the carbs. that sit around on land-lawnmowers, etc. are pretty simple. Most lawnmowers being four stroke are much more forgiving on a carb. that may not be functioning perfectly. A carb. running lean will not melt down a cylinder bore on a four stroke.

I respectfully disagree, It's been my experience that engines that sit with fuel in the carbs for any extended length become a problem (especially two strokes). I've worked on and fixed an old 20 horse Merc at the ramp and on the water tooo many times to not believe this, Usually happens when someone else used the boat last and did not run the gas out of the carbs. I'm a firm believer on running gas out of a single carb 2 stroke or 4 stroke, but still not sure of the best method for protecting a multi carbed two stroke from gumming up. I currently use stabilizer and cross my fingers...

Sorry, but I can't resist.... :D

When weeds plug up the prop = weed problem
When rust plugs up the fuel filter = rust problem
When parasitic load drains a battery = parasitic drain problem
When contaminants plug carb passages = contaminant problem

aaahhhh, I must be bored.... :)

Well, I disagree to be less agreeable.(JK).
Seriously, tho, it seems mid to late summer, I get slammed with contaminated fuel fouling carbs and fuel systems in general.Iether water or varnish from fermentation in the southwest Florida sunshine.
It's a big problem here year-round tho.
The varnish gets smell-able and visable in many of the boats I encounter. They seem to make it thru the Summer, provided the guy is a dedicated weekend warrior.
