I have a 1987 mariner 150 magnum and it had set for 5 years +....Me and my grandfather are working on it trying to get it running good.... WE have changed the plugs, cleaned the gas tank, changed the filter, ran new hose, cleaned the carbs, and rebuilt the water pump.....WE carried it to the boat ramp the other day to run it a few minutes and it cranked with ease, but while it was running, the top and middle carb were gushing gas out the front....my grandad thinks it is the needle and seat messed up and needs replacing.....any ideas???? We checked the floats and they looked to be in good shape....any help would be greatly appreciated....

Re: Carbs gushing gas.....

The trouble is obviously the needle valves. Perhaps they are being held open by debris that has gotten into them, or grown in place as stagnant fuel evaporated.

If you opened up the carbs and cleaned them without replacing the gaskets, gasket failure can cause these same symptoms.

I'd put another gasket kit in, and carefully disassemble and examine the needles and seats, and clean out all the related passages with compressed air and carb cleaner.

hope it helps

Yes it does help...I am going to order a gasket kit for them and then tear into them and check everything out...IT doesn't sound like to bad of a problem.....
The needle valve set under the float doesn't it?????

Either the needle and seat were not reassembled properly, they are worn and not sealing, the floats not reassembled properly, are hanging up, or they are misadjusted. That of course assumes the carbs were indeed cleaned properly and that debris is not inhibiting fuel shut off when the float chamber is full.

Like Silvertip says, it's gotta be right. If the carbs have you baffled, have any teenager that fixes lawn mowers help you. That's about how complicated they are.

You can do it, just go slow at first and be sure it's right.

hope it helps
