Carbs Leaking Fuel

1963 Merc 1000 Inline-6. The carbs appear to be spraying excess fuel from what I believe to be the main jets (angled tube in the throat). I really noticed it when I was cranking the motor, with the choke on. Also, a fair amount of fuel flowed out of these tubes when I tilted the motor back after running.
All carbs were cleaned and rebuilt, with new floats, and the needle valve levers set according to the manual. The bulb did get firm when I primed it. The motor idled fine after it was warmed up, and warm starting was nearly instantanious. She seemed to be difficult to start cold.
Thanks for your help.

mellowyellow,
I'm guessing I should adjust them so they close sooner. Is that correct? Do you think that it would make cold starting easier?

Thanks

Re: Carbs Leaking Fuel

have always used the "even w/top of carb when
up-side down" meathod my self. as 4 starting,
they like lots and lots of gas. primer her up
good and then add a couple extra pumps. what
worked well 4 me was to primer her as I was
prepping to launch, then again when she was in
the water. u can do a search here and read for
hrs. on this subject... they are notorious for
this.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: Carbs Leaking Fuel

I started up the motor today, and it started up within 5 seconds when cold. Pumping the bulb until firm didn't flood the carbs, however one time I did get a little overzealous pumping the bulb, and had fuel leaking from the carb. Is it possible to apply enough pressure to the bulb to force the needles open? Or, do I have to reset the floats so they close earlier?

Thanks.
