I have a 1984 Volvo Penta 8 cylinder with a Edelbrock Marine carb. 600 CFM when I throttle up more than 1000RPM it sounds like is chocking and backfires. I had no problems with this until now, does anyone knows what is the reason for this and solution.
I checked and replaced the fuel filter it was clean. I have had the carb. for about a year.
this is a pic of the carb.

Thanks for any advice.....

Re: Carburator backfiring

I would verify that engine timing is correct. If so might be time for a carb rebuild. Just went through that with my holley.

Check and reset timing and check and verify firing order. Check cap/rotor plugs and wires.

I will check on that, but it starts right up, and only happens when I go over 1000 RPM...?

Check timing, and engine vacuum. Chance in possibility that you have a burned valve or a camshaft going flat.

My holley was spitting raw fuel at idle and was puddling up on intake runner and still idled decent just smokey. Check timing and that timing advance is working correctly. If that checks out throw a vacumn guage on there it will tell you alot.

Carter carbs, don't get me going. Does it do it all the time, or when engine is cold , warm, hot? It could be dirt/gum/varnish in the carb causing leanness. Did you use a fuel stabilizer last fall. Backfires are usually indications of leanness but... Is the auto choke working?.

Sticky andvance weights in the distributor can cause timimg problems as well

well starts right up and I let it warm. then when I start to throttle up anything over 1000 RPM starts to chocke and backfires. I did not use any fuel stabilizer and I just refuel last weekend.
I took the carburator apart and noticed one of the needles out of place. don't know how that could happend, maybe when I took it apart, but is back on now and the carb was pretty clean and the auto choke is working. I will check timing, rotor and plugs.
will let you guys know.
Thanks for all the input.
