Carburator screw coming loose among other things...

I just got back from a fishing trip in northern MB, had some problems with the motor up there that I need some help with.

First of all, throttle linkage screws fell out so I lost all throttle control....That must have been my fault, i must not have tightened them up, I can barely believe that though.

Secondly, could not get the high speed jet screw to stay on my setting without it vibrating out of adjustment...it feels worn out...do I need a new screw? or what else could I try, I had to tape the knob up to get it to stay other wise it went off adjustment and bogged out.

and lastly, I smoked a rock with the prop, I see you can get a new alum one...but I am unsure of which pitch I need....the old plastic one is laying on the bottom of the lake so i cant check it.

This is on a 1962 Evinrude Sportwin 10HP

Thank you guys you have been a great help

As far as the high speed needle vibrating loose, tighten up the packing nut until the knob moves only with resistance.

Lindy46 is correct. The brass nut at the base of the needle valve seats against a fiber washer which compresses when that nut is tightened. That compressing helps hold the needle valve in adjustment. If tightening doesn't help, the packing may need replacing - you can get the packing washers at your local Johnrude dealer.

As for the prop, most likely your motor would be fine with the stock prop, which would have been a 3-blade 8-1/4" diameter by 8-1/2" pitch aluminum prop. Not sure what your plastic prop would have been, but it was definitely a later replacement.

If tightening it doesn't help, replace the packings.

The plastic prop was 8-1/4 x 8

Which screws came loose? I hope you don't mean the ones holding the flat throttle butterfly plate to the shaft. That can spell disaster.

The screws that fell out were the ones underneath the flywheel that hold the plug wires up and everything...all that happened was when i throttled down, i couldnt throttle back to full.

Thanks for the help, will be ordering the prop soon.

Are the plastic props more prone to braking off?

Yes, the plastic props break easier. Their selling point was they were cheaper and were less likely to damage the drivetrain if you did tag something.
