Carburetor Identification

I want to order a kit and rebuild my carb on my 1989 Evinrude 30. I found a manual on Boatinfo that covers 4 carbs, type I, type II, type III and type IV. I can't tell if one of them is mine. Mine has a tag with "398080 MX 10 D M" and the top is stamped CM397632. I just want to get the right parts and instructions for a rebuild.

BRP shows only one carb kit for your yr and model #, 398729. Get through a BRP dealer or maybe here on I-Boats.

Thanks, didn't even realize those were forum sponsors. I will buy here since this is where I come for help. Done plenty of wrenching over the years both gas and diesel but never a 2 stroke. Do these carb kits come with the specs needed for float adj etc?

Re: Carburetor Identification

Got my carb kit today along with a fuel pump kit. Any tips before I do the rebuilds this weekend? Although I have rebuilt many a Quadrajet in my younger days, I have never messed with 2 stroke stuff before. I do know enough to be gentle with the float valve seat and the idle needle valve.

If you have rebuilt Quadrajets, you should have no problem. The main thing is getting it clean, tiny passages etc. and of course float setting just a hair over parallel with the carb body while upside down. Inspect the idle needle for any damage. You may want to replace that as well if any damage. Were there problems with the pump?

Not sure if there are pump problems but the kit was so cheap I thought I'd do it too. I am suspecting gum & varnish in the carb.

Re: Carburetor Identification

Did the carb today, it was actually very clean. The one problem I found was the rubber (viton?) bushing that fits into the recess where the idle mixture needle screws in was cracked and fell out in three pieces. I believe this was causing the motor to suck in air. After the rebuild she now runs good again.
I did notice I am missing the screen that fits over the air horn, and I don't see where I can buy one. I see it overlaps the idle speed screw bushing and helps retain it.

Also on the fuel inlet where the quick connect snaps onto the motor, there is a gap of about 1/8". You can push the connector in and the gap will close, but as soon as you let go it will open up again. Is this normal, or should I be looking for a new inlet fitting? The fuel supply line and fittings are new. I also remember reading somewhere that fuel line parts other than Evinrude brand could cause problems.

Thanks for any help.

If not mistaken, I believe the bushing you are referring to is merely to prevent the idle screw from turning due to vibration. It would not suck air from there, but you should replace. As far as your fuel hose, its probably out of spec aftermarket. Best to get OMC / BRP hose. Little pricey but last for ever if you take care of it.

Thanks for the info. The fuel hose and bulb is a Moeller, but the plastic end that attaches to the motor only says "Taiwan" on it ): The metal end at the tank says nothing on it. Should I just replace the whole thing?
My son had real nice metal tanks and the last boat shop he took it to sold him plastic ones and kept his metal ones, really pisses me off. Been too long to do anything about it now. They were the ones that fixed him up with this fuel line also.

Anyone? If I order the genuine Evinrude hose will it come with a plastic "Taiwan" end on it?
