carburetor leak

I have a GM305 , 228 1983 Mercruiser which has not been run for over two years.. I attempted to change the fuel filter but could not crack the fuel line nut after applying steady, but not excessive pressure. Now have a gas leak coming from underneath the fuel filter housing. It is not coming from the fuel line fitting to the filter. I'm not sure if I caused the problem or this is overflow perhaps from a sticking float. There is plenty of gas getting thru the jets. (this is new gas). Do I need to pull the carburetor? <br />thanks
