Hi everyone. I just purchased my first boat and I'm trying to get it running. The engine is a 68 Johnson 40 hp, and my problem is that I'm missing the low idle needle valve. I was able to find a needle valve, but I have yet to find the packing and packing nut. My question to you guys is, can I make my own?
I'm thinking about taking a brass fitting and tapping the center of it for the needle valve and using an o-ring for the packing. Would this work or would there be a problem I'm not seeing? I don't pretend to be a mechanic as I don't know enough to even hold a mechanics wrenches, but unless I'm overlooking something, this seems to be something I can remedy fairly easily. Any comments/feedback/suggestions would be appreciated.

Okay, so I found that the packing is available in the rebuild kit, so I can get that handy. Unfortunately I also saw that along with the packing nut I need a bushing. I can special order the bushing and packing nut but it will take a couple of weeks to get, and I'd love to get this thing going before then. I'm still fairly certain making a packing nut wouldn't be much trouble, but this bushing throws me for a loop. Does anyone have any suggestions there, or does anyone know of another readily available carb that would replace the one that I have? I'm willing to spend money, but I'm not wanting to wait. Obviously I will if I have to, but that would make me sad
I only have a few weeks before I have to be in Florida for work, so by waiting it would be next year before I could get this boat on the water.
