Ayuh,... They've built that motor darn near Forever, but odds are you're lookin' at a Rochester Quadrajet...
They only come in 1 flavor....

If it's a Late model, it'll be a Merc/ Weber AFB clone,... aka. the Edlebrock 1409...

Yes you are right I identified it by pictures it is the Rochester Quad. Does anyone have a thought on the Edelbrock 600 as a replacement? Which is better? thanks

Re: Carburetor

Well I have been having problems with my rpm's. I have a rebuilt jasper engine tested to 325 hp at 5400rpm with the 600 edelbrock. I can only get 4000rpm out of it. So I was toying with the idea of switching to the carb they tested the engine to. Also this is the only used part on the motor. I have tested the tach, have a low pitch 17 prop.

If you cant salvage the Rochester, the 1409 is a great replacement. Plug and play, right out of the box.

Re: Carburetor

I love my Edelbrock 1409. You can find them online for about $320 instead of the $500 some places want for them.

I haven't yet worked on a Q-jet but based on the videos I have saw and such I'm pretty sure an Edelbrock is a lot easier to work on too.

I have a 4 barrel Q-jet sitting on my old engine that I will be going through soon so guess I will find out.

Re: Carburetor

before you trash away the quadrajet .....

1)have you verified the base things : filter & pump ....

2) dont forget that when you produce more hp you need more gas ...maybe your jets are too lean now .
Do the secondaries upper butterfly opens when accellerating hard ?

is you idle still fair ?
did you have to turn the idle speed screw in more to attain a proper idle ?
(meaning you are definitely lean )

from 260HP to 325HP is a 65HP gain : major ..... tuning is different

quadrajet carbs are great on gas consumption ......think of it !

:::I was going to check this on Sat in the water

is you idle still fair ?

:::It idles great no adjustment

:::Are you referring in a good way? Because it is a pig on gas right now.

Yes...and No.

As long as you are on the primaries only, a Q-jet is hard to beat for mileage (knotage?). BUT, once those great big secondaries open...just watch that fuel gauge fall!!!!

Re: Carburetor

Edelbrock/Weber carbs are very easy to rebuild, but a Q-Jet is 10x easier. Only one set of floats to worry about for starters...

By set you mean only 2 floats?

My 1409 only has 2 floats.

Re: Carburetor

quadrajet as one centered float ....
best ever carb for off camber ( when you turn tight)

when cruising along on primaries , it is best carb for fuel consumption
when opening the monster secondaries =power rush !
