I have a 1968 Johnson 85 HP that I would like do the car coil conversion to. Can anyone tell me how difficult this is, what I would need, how to wire it in, etc.

Re: CarCoil Conversion

It is really not difficult, most any auto mechanic should be able to help you with this. You are doing away with the pulse pak, and coil, the red lead going to the pak would now go to the coil. You would need a coil with built in resistor, or seperate ballast resistor. The coil, and plug lead's screw into the dist. cap, they are not a push in.

That's about it. Hot wire from ignition switch to coil + or in-line resistor if used. Coil - to points. Also add a condenser to the - terminal. The points under the flywheel still have to function properly.

That's the theory anyway. I have never tried it personally. I have heard that the points don't last long being used that way. They are obsolete and expensive. Good luck.
