hi, have an inflatable zodiac with a 9.9 yamaha that i use for fishing the flats in the indian river. due to my budget i have been cramped in this thing once wa week for 4 years!! i am planning to upgrade to a 12 ft carolina skiff and keeping my exisisting motor. any thoughts? any advice would be much appreciated. i am thinking that it might be slightly under powered as i do fish a considerable distance from my dock (atleast 4 miles). i have heard of conversion kits turning a 9.9 into a fifteen anyone heard of that?? thanks in advance.

Until Sept 07 I'd been running around in a 12 ft Aluminum powered by a late 1970s 4HP Merc and according to my GPS I 'd been getting 10 mph, flat out. Your 9.9 should get you the "4 miles" even faster than that. Gee willikers, you'll be almost out of displacement mode and on the step and ready to lift off with a 9.9 :)

The C Skiff is a flat bottom so it will plane with little power.

Forget the changeover to a 15. There is more to it than what most think.

The 12' must be an older model. I do not see a 12' in the current line up. Is it a J12?

Just check the transom height. If the boat has a 20" transom and your engine is a 15", it will not work.

I see it now. Thanks. It's only rated for a max of 25. A 9.9 is not out of the question.

Ask the dealer about transom height. As stated, a 15" engine won't work on a 20" transom.

dan are you talking about indian river delaware? Thats where im from just curious. I launch bowers and slaughter beach and some others that are verry close to indian river. The last trip i took this season was not a fishing trip i launched from bowers early in the morning on a calm day and crossed the delaware bay into NJ. It was a great trip and my wife is from NJ and has friends that have a beach house right on the jersy shore. We docked like a block from their house. It took about an hour or a little more each way. Takes 3 hours by car to make the drive around the bay. Used more gas though but at least it was fun except the way back the bay was a little rougher on the way back. We waited til the tides were perfect both ways though.

I agree on the easy planing ability of the Carolina Skiff design. I found it takes very little hp to get up and on top. The 9.9 should work adequately if you don't load it up with too much gear and position it properly.
