Carpet in the bilge. Why?

I have a 1985 Larson citation bowrider. The bilge has carpet in it. Does it really need to be there? We had a couple of rainy days and the bilge filled up because the trailer is pretty level. I noticed that that carpet in there is pretty icky. Oily, gunky, and I was wondering what the harm would be if I just cut it out of there. The guy that had the boat prior to me took immaculate care of it but I think some oil or something must have gotten on the carpet in there. I'm afraid that if I ever run my pump that stuff will get into the water and I'll get nailed for pollution.

get it out. all it is, is a mold haven. i personally don't think carpet belongs in a boat any way.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Looks like laziness on the part of the manufacturer to not cut out when laying the carpet. I never understood the point of carpet in there. It's all greasy too. Blech!

LOL Many boat manufactures swear that everybody that buys there boats brings them home and parke them in an air conditioned and heated garage. ANd they are only used twice a year LOL My old maxum was carpeted everywhere you could imagine....the fuel tank was bolted down to a carpeted floor, the storage lockers in the floor were carpeted? It is crazy overkill if you ask me and thay put carpets in places, that if they owned a boat they would never do it again!! Personally I like carpet in boats....but thats just me !

Re: Carpet in the bilge. Why?

I just started re-doing my floor (19' bowrider) and was ripping out the old carpet. When I got to the ski locker I had the same question - why carpet it? It was a sorry, smelly mess of carpet I tore out of that area. I see no reason to put new in there. I may put a grated mat in there to allow the water to stay off whatever I store sown there.

I also had carpet all the way to the end of the plywood floor, the last 3' of which are not visible (covered by the jump seats, etc.) No need to replace that either, right?

My SeaRay Bowrider had carpet in the ski well and anchor locker. it was to protect the items in these compartments. muffle noise and give a finished look. I removed the carpet in the ski well after it got yucky.
