Carpet replacing

I got the old carpet out in one piece to use for a pattern center pertty much gone. If I measure widest part of the boat where the capet was the worst and use old carpet as a pattern plus add inch each side I should be good on measurment?
I wanted to post photos but photo bucket has not been working lately. Plus how much adhesive would I need trying to put in in one piece (15'x6') Thanks for any advice.

I replace a lot of boat carpet. I sugest adding 2 or 3 inches place carpet int boat and then do a final trim with a carpet knife. if this ia a glue down fold carpet in 1/2 glue 1 side and fold back the other half and glue. I glue before my final trim. it is easier because carpet will usiually strech move or shrink while installing. Otherwise the most often made mistake is using too much glue.

kmarine, Thanks for quick reply so I will add 2" each side then glue front half first and then the back half then do my final trimming after right? I am a little nervous cause I have to lift driver and passenger consoles to get carpet under them but will just take my time and should work out.
I am on my way to get a carpet roller to use during installation. Plus almost have floor clean but the few spots cannot scrape off what will work best to lift these mineral or acetone? Thanks again.

I would try a sharper scraper .. or possibly grind it off. Acetone + Scraper could work for them annoying spots.

As far a a roller.. you might try a D roller ( triple roller head ).

Another pointer that helped me out is to make your own notched handheld trowel out of a plastic spreader ( little putty spreader ). Man it helps a lot in them hard to get places and around things/corners.

Another thing.. If your gonna cut off 8" to leave you a few inches off your pattern. .. I would leave the 8".

There is NO reason to not go bigger and cut exact. You will still have the same problems with internal corner cuts.

I would also IMHO .. go side to side. NOT front to back Unless you have a simple flat deck without any cutouts around posts or bases.

All you need is a good Carpenters blade with a few replacement blades handy. A Carpet knife is good and all .. but fiberglass will much the flat ends up too fast .. again IMHO ..

Dr. Thanks for the reply side to side might be better cause got consoles on each side pass side I can lift and get under easy but driver side is going to be tight. I will leave more than 2" and dry run the side to side install Thanks again for the advise really want this to look good plus the stripers are going nuts right now and I have my boat out of service cause of carpet.

I use a wire wheel on my angle grinder to remove old glue and carpet pieces. I can clean a floor in a 20 ft boat in about 10 minutes this way or spend hours scraping.{dont forget the safty glasses} I have also lifted counsols an inch using pry bars and dowel rods or other type of spacers and tuck the carpet underneath with a putty knife reatherr than trimming. It looks nicer this way and sometimes is easier.

Got wire wheel will do plus do you do side to side install some times? Sounds like might work on my install with the consoles.

I usiually glue side to side. This allows better access. as for a roller, I dont find it necessary for small areas like boats. I simply slide around a couple of heavy toolboxes. Most of My dissapointments were from using too much glue. Over the years I learned less is more.

Just wondering ..

What glue/adhesive are you using ?

Are you using marine rubber backed carpet ?

What size Notched trowel do you use for your materials that you use ?

i ise a 1/4 inch noched trowel for marine rubber backed carpet. as for adhesive a latex will work, bur i also use a lot of contact adhesive with a spray gun.

OK think I am ready to cut carpet tomorrow Little nervus here is photo of the consoles. Think I should start side to side till I get under consoles the pass side I can lift high should be no problem but driver side comes up maybe 2". Or should I just start front to back?

Side to side will be easire to manage, lay the carpet in the boat and then fold the starboard side over to port and apply the glue. Then unfold the carpet onto the glue and roll the snot out of it, then fold the dry side over and glue, unfold, and roll.

Trim it up with a utility knife (sharp blade) and clean off any excess glue.

Keep people off of the carpet and out of the boat until the adhesive has cured, about a week.

jig, Thanks sounds like a plan will cut carpet 3" oversize on all sides prefit they go for it. Will post photos after complete Thanks for all the replys.....

Making a paper template to the exact size would be of great help to you and give you a little experience as to how this all works out in a boat. Then go find the absolute sharpest carpet knife you can buy...have plenty of blade's if you use a replacement blade type of knife...carpet just destroy's them.

OK cut pattern about 3" oversize on all sides and placed carpet in boat to check fit looks like will work out great. Tomorrow will glue down then trim when glue is set. Thank you all for the replys and help was really nervous that I would mess it up but looks good so far.

Thank you had a friend help with lifting consoles and rolled the heck out of the carpet. Helped that same friend replace floor in his boat last year so we are both happy boaters now. But a boaters work is never done...
