Carpet to paint transition...

I am replacing a section of my floor and to do so I ripped up the carpet. The carpet in my boat ('91 Larson All American) was on the floor and up the sides as well. I have left the carpet on the sides and will be painting the new floor with a non-skid and am wondering how to make the transition from the painted floor to the carpeted sides. Thanks!

Want something that won't rot or corrode? Try some grey PVC pipe in 1/2" or 3/4" size. Slice it in half on a table saw and use it as a half-round molding. Attach with stainless screws. Don't forget to use sealer on the screws to keep water from leaking iunder the floor.

Grey PVC is waterproof, UV proof and very flexable so it will conform to the contours of your boat. Its also solid color, so it will take bumps, bangs and scrapes and still look good.

PVC usually comes with printing on it. Try some acetone to remove the print.

Re: Carpet to paint transition...

Good idea, but alas the carpet that I removed does not go all the way down to the floor. The carpet goes down to where the side walls meet the floor, or about an inch or two above that. Make sense? So I can't screw the "trim" in as I don't really have much to attach it to with screws. I know there is a solution here, but I'm going blank.

Another idea I did have was to remove more of the carpet up the side and just paint that area as well, I just don't know how good that will look.

Where I had carpet meet the hull, I put contact adhesive on the back of the carpet - about 2 or 3 inches along the edge, then folded the carpet back on itsself making a nice rolled under edge. Then glue the carpet down. The straighter the cut edge, the better it will look when folded under because there will be a "shadow' of the carpet where it is folded under.

Here is a picture of the carpet treatment. Your's is basically the reverse of what I did - my carpet went from floor to hull, your going from hull toward floor, but it should still work.

That's a good idea. It will be tricky to do since it is on the boat and I will kind of be working upside down. That may be the best thing to do though. Thanks!

If you can remove the carpet, maybe you could take it to an upholstery shop and have them finish the edge, so it looks good and just carry your non skid up the side under the carpet, then reinstall the carpet.

Check out durabak, that is what I am going to finish my floor off in. I also have carpet on the sides, but it comes all the way down to the floor so I don't have to change anything.

I am with Lou on this.

There are many shops than can put a binding on the edge of the carpet for you. An example of what a binding looks like is what is on the edge of carpet samples you would see at Lowes or Home Depot or any carpet store.
