Im looking to build garage next to or near my sheds at my house. Ive seen the pole buldings that you can have built but they are a bit big. Im looking for something that i can work on my boat in and be out of the weather. At wal-mart they sell a carport that is 25'X10X8 feet. Its a panther creek carport. (www.panthercreek.com) Anyways i was thinking about buying one of those and closing in the back and sides with plywood and adding siding to match my house. I have been thinking about building this on top of a concrete slab that i can do and bolt this carport down to the slab. fot the front i want to install large shed style double doors that are wide enough i can back my boat into. Also ive seen plans for garages that you can build yourself (http://www.niagaradesigns.com/nd121.html) im not sure what i want to do. just want a place out of the weather to work on my boat. Anyone ever build a garage and any advice????? Also im not sure what permits i would need. i live in a pretty rural area.

Re: carport or garage

I have also looked into a carport/garage and there are MANY available on the net. The basic initial cost is good and then there are the "add on's" which accumulate $$$$ fast.

What type of climate do you live in? I live in a snow belt and have to be cautious of what is put up. A wood stick built garage will last longer but it depends on the area.

Search this section of iboats and alot of people have built them and there is a fairly recent one posted in the dockside chat section.

Check with your local town hall .... permits are usually needed but easy to obtain. Just as an example where I live I can not build a barn/garage within 50' of my own propert line...... no real reason but it's the rule. Permits usually vary if it is "attached" to your home or free standing.

In my area a pole barn is a pole barn - unless you pour a slab - then it becomes a "garage", requiring an entirely different permitting process. Take the time to check out what type of structure requires what type of permit in your area.
By the sounds of it, you'd be better off stick building what you want as opposed to all the additional work you are thinking about doing to one of those kit carports.

I concur with the above. First, check your zoning for necessary permitting, but I would be trying to build a stick built garage - will probably be sturdier than the carport and addition/attachment route, and in the long run you will be happier. At least I would be.

I agree and in our area be it stick or pre-fab metal building like Sears sells. Or wood like Lowes/Home depot sells.
120 square feet max without building permit.
