carry gas in?

I'm thinking of renting a slip for my boat this year, but the marina doesn't have gas for me to fill it up on the water. Is it too much of a hassle to carry my own fuel in? My boat is 23' with a 5.7L and holds 75 gal. I don't want to have to trailer it every time I need to put gas in it. Has anyone had to do this? If so are there cheap fuel cans or drums that hold more than 10 gallons anywhere?

Thanks!

I cant even think how big a PITA hauling that much gas to a boat every week would be ?

I have seen them in 14 and 28 gallon but i think the weight of the 28 gallon would be out of control

You may be able to have fuel delivered in 44 gallon drums. Have a chat to your local fuel depot.

I use 6 gal containers - 5 of em - and that will fill a 1/2 empty boat. One on each hand is a pretty good load, but it's not too bad. I have a straight level shot at the slip here in FL. In MD it involves a set of steps and about a 300 yd. walk through the woods. I don't do that one any more than I have to. It does save some $$ compared to the marina, and if I have to go through Georgia or Virginia or somewhere, I fill em up!

Some marina's won't let you fill your boat with portable containers, Its actualy against the law around here, people are afraid of fuel spilling into the water.

Jim

What a nighmare this sounds like. Easier to trailer the boat to a gas station...

Or isn't there another marina or fueling point somewhere on the lake you can fill it up at?

Re: carry gas in?

Here's the deal, I don't like to trailer the boat all the way there and back and have to deal with it every time I wanna go out. I also don't want to have to take my tow vehicle every time I go boating (which is about a 45 min. drive). I'm able to park within 150 feet of the boat and it's pretty much paved all the way to the dock so I figure it might not be so bad. To my knowledge there are no fueling stations anywhere on the lake. 'Think it'd be worth the hassle of carrying gas to not have to trailer it all the time and stuff?

People haul fuel all the time. Get yourself one of those tank/cart things illustrated above. Or do what most people do who are in your situation (docking/mooring a boat without a fuel source) - get a bunch of decent quality 5 gallon jugs and invest in a garden-type cart to haul them in. It's a hassle, but if you just be meticulously clean and careful, it is done every day. And from the sound of it, it will be far less of a hassle than loading, unloading, moving the boat just to fuel it. Just keep it clean - no spills at all. Get a few of the absorbant cloths they sell for minor fuel spills (pretty much look like a diaper), and have them around so they catch all dribbles. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher or a couple handy and ready to go should the worst case happen. Dont' do it with a bunch of people in the boat if you can avoid it.

I have fueled this way for years off and on.

How busy is this lake? If everyone has to trailer out or carry fuel in, I think I would be checking with the proper authorities on what to do to mount a fuel dock/station and cash in! :D

Sounds like you're willing to try it....if you don't mind the hauling labor and you/marina/DNR aren't bothered by the inevitable fuel splashes at the station, in the trunk of your car, and in the lake, then give it a go. How quickly this tires you will rely directly on how often you run your boat. Legal or not, I'm very leery of hauling a crapload of full gas cans in my vehicle for smell and safety reasons...certainly wouldn't want my family and friends to spend any siginficant amount of time in that vehicle...God forbid you should get rear-ended... But everyone has different risk tolerances, and maybe the gas station is very close to the marina, so maybe that isn't an issue for you. Not saying I'm right, just stating my thoughts and opinions.

Have you asked the marina, or others who use it, what do most other people do to get gas?

You are more likely to get useful suggestions there. None of us here have even been to your lake....

Good luck whatever you decide!
