Carter Fuel pump rebuild?

I've got an '81 140 that USED to have a carter mechanical fuel pump on it. A couple years back I wasn't getting fuel, so in a hurry to make things work I just slapped a cheap electrical fuel pump from Oreilly's on there. Well 3 years later I've noticed that that little electrical pump doesn't seem to keep up with demand. Sometimes for no reason she'll just die at WOT. -that's what I attribute it to...
Anyway, short story long, is there a way to rebuild these old Carter pumps (do they fail that often?) or am i'm simply doomed to pony up the $?

Re: Carter Fuel pump rebuild?

It used to be common to rebuild mechanical fuel pumps. In principle it is a simple thing to do.

Whether because of liability issues, or whatever - it is basically impossible to find a rebuild kit to do it yourself anymore.

If you continue to use an electric pump, you ought to at least wire in a pressure switch so it will shut off if the engine isn't running. Keeps you (and others) safe.

Ayuh,... As Mark said, ya can't get the Kits, so it ain't rebuildable....

After readin' yer story,...
I'd sooner think ya got Crud in the fuel system...
A pump should run darn near Forever, if fed Clean fuel...
I'd mount a cannister type fuel filter between the tank, 'n pump myself...

Btw,...Ya really need to run the power like Mark said too...
