:confused:I converted by 1976 Johnson 9.9 form short shaft to long shaft. The prop shaft on the long shaft unit did not have a hole for the carter pin. What should I do, just tighten down the retainer nut? Any suggestion or advice will be appreciated.

A propshaft without a cotter pin hole? Sounds like the cotter pin is still in the hole, broke off and flush with the shafts diameter.

If by some weird chance of misfortune you have actually come across a propshaft w/o a cotter pin hole, drill one where it belongs as there is no way the prop nut is going to stay there without one.

Know what happens when one puts the engine into reverse without a prop nut?

Joe, you were right on on this problem. I had to use a drill to open up the hold. The old pen was really wedged in hard. Thanks for your help.:)
