While I am in my “add-a-filter” mode I figure there should be an oil bypass filter added, too. Any idea where I branch out and back into a Caterpillar 3208T so I can add an oil bypass filter?

Its a great idea to use a by-pass filter, you can extend your oil change interval greatly. Im not familiar with this engine, but you can T into your oil preasure guage line for the inlet, and if your engine has a turbo, you can go back in where the turbo return line is, provided it is not presurize, most are not and are just a drain. Otherwise you may have to tap into your oil pan.

For the return oil, Amsoil makes a swivel fitting that you can install on your oil filler cap. When you turn the cap to remove it, the fitting stays put. That way you don't have to punch any holes in valve covers or oil pans.

For the feed oil, you would usually tee off of the oil pressure switch fitting. By pass filters, by their nature, limit the flow of oil thru them to a small percentage of the total flow. It should not affect your oil pressure.

PermaCool makes a sandwich adapter that fits between the engine and the engine’s oil filter. It has an in and out port to route lines to a bypass filter.

http://www.permacool.com/Catalog/Cat_page28.html

I plan to install a couple Motor Guard M-30 filters in parallel. I am hoping I don’t need it, but if I use a PermaCool sandwich adapter do I need to be concerned with any reduced flow rate from routing oil through the filters? The engine may have oil pressure/bypass control…I don’t know…see below.

The oil pan has 3 drain plugs in it. One plug is dead center on the bottom of the pan and there is a plug on either side of the pan. I presume I can use either of the plugs on the side for the return?

It appears the Cat 3208T is set up for a bypass filter?!? Can you tell from this picture…and if it is, does it show the in/out ports?

DO NOT USE THE PURMACOOL ADAPTER . This adapter is for an extra regular filter or an oil cooler. you want the return line to drain derectly into the oil pan or like boomyal said. If you were to use this adapter, it would starve your engine of oil due to the very restrictive flow of the bypass filter. No, No, No.

Lube dude is right.

Those engines do have both flow and pressure control.

Take the pressure from the oil gallery where the oil light switch or pressure gauge is fitted.
You would be better to take the return back to one of those angled points on the side of the oil pan that is for the dip stick tube options.

Try not to return the oil back below the oil level in the pan if posible.

Good luck,

Peter
