Let me start by thanking everyone on this forum. I have used it for yrs without registering by simply searching old threads and answering all my questions based on previous posts.

Now with this new issue wanted to get some thoughts. Of course this had to happen on a much anticipated trip to the Keys, but that's neither here nor there.

Background: This is a 1995 200 Johnson Oceanrunner, I have been the sole owner. I had been getting some false alarms both over heating and low oil last year. I had the vro disconnected and have been pre mixing for 1 yr, only ran about 50 hrs since I had this done.

We fished 2 successful days and at the end of the second day we decided to call it a day. Put the boat in nuetral to bring in the lines. Before we could get all the lines in the motor cut out. When it cut out there was a strange clanking/grinding noise. At this point we all knew something was really wrong. After this the motor was hard to start, just turned as if it were flooded. It finally cranked up with a huge ploom of smoke (it was always a smoker) but this was very extreme. I decided to ty and head in, it was sluggish to get on a plane, but made it and we were on our way. The motor ran good on the way in, can't even say it sounded like something was wrong as we ran in. As I came off a plane 10 miles later you started to hear knocking. Idled for a few seconds before I tried to do a faster idle. Thats when the knocking got real load, and motor stopped. Now it won't turn at all and I think it's gonna need quite a bit of work. I do have a friend that has said he will take the heads off and see whats going on, since i'm nowhere near a mechanic.

Any guesses on what we will find once we open it up?

I do know this will be a pretty penny to fix, and being that the engine is 15 yrs old. I am not sure what to do. rebuild/replace motor

Do you think the switch from vro to pre mix could contribute to this? I was mixing 1 gallon oil/50 gallons gas...

Without a doubt you have some internal damage. Could be any or all of a multitude of things. Broken ring, bad rod, thrown a bearing or 2. The list goes on. You have likely seized it solid when you continued your trip back.
Get some teardown done to find the exact damage and root cause of the issue and make a decision from there as to rebuilding or replacing.
Sorry to hear bad news like that and good luck.
Welcome to iboats. I am just sorry it is under these circumstances.:(

Just read over your post again and you mention you are pre-mixing. You did remember the oil on your last fill up didn't you ???

Thanks, pretty sure won't know anything till it's opened up, but wanted to throw it out there since this group seems to have seen it all.

Turns out it's the lower unit. Looking for a replacement now.
